Midtown Dental’s Dr. Jenny Apekian attended a Dentsply Sirona training on dental implants in December 2022.

At Midtown Dental, we constantly strive to offer our patients the best care by using leading best practices and equipment at the forefront of dentistry.

Dr. Jenny Apekian, our founder and dentist, traveled to North Carolina in December to the Dentsply Sirona Academy for advanced training in the comprehensive surgical placement and restoration of dental implants.

In addition to speaking at events in the past for Dentsply Sirona, Dr. Apekian continually improves her skills at the courses hosted by the dental equipment manufacturer.

“We are always learning about new materials and workflows to provide the best care to our patients,” Dr. Apekian said. “The area of full arch dentistry is particularly changing rapidly as advancements are allowing for reduced cost and greater efficiencies.”

What Leads to the Need for Replacement Teeth?

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, the most common cause of tooth loss among adults is gum disease, also known as periodontal disease.

Periodontitis damages the soft tissue and, without treatment, can destroy the bone that supports teeth, causing teeth to loosen. It’s usually the result of poor oral hygiene.

“We hope that oral care is always a priority, but we understand that people come with a variety of backgrounds,” Dr. Apekian said. “Perhaps dental care was not a priority in the home, perhaps a patient has gone through a period of depression affecting their ability to take care of themselves, perhaps they were medically predisposed to lose their teeth early, or had anxiety about reaching out to a dentist. One thing we take very seriously is to never judge a patient and always make them feel welcome.”

What are the Benefits of Full Arch Dental Implants?

A before and after photo of how fixed hybrid dentures/full arch/all-on-4 changed a Midtown Dental patient's smile.

The procedure to replace the missing teeth in an entire arch (the upper or lower jaw) is called different names, used interchangeably, to refer to the implant treatment where permanent dentures are surgically placed into a patient’s mouth. Common names include fixed hybrid dentures, full arch dental implants, and all on 4.

“When patients have multiple missing teeth, pain throughout the mouth, several decayed and fractured teeth, it might be time to consider a fresh start,” Dr. Apekian said. “If you’ve been living in constant chronic pain or have difficulty simply chewing your food or smiling comfortably, full arch dentistry can truly be life-changing.”

How Does Implant Dentistry Replace Natural Teeth?

The tooth replacement matches your natural teeth while also being more impervious to decay like other more conventional tooth replacements.

All on 4 doesn’t refer to four dental implants but rather the four or more titanium posts required to secure the fixed prosthesis. Because dental implants fuse to your jawbone, they tend to feel more secure, natural, and comfortable than bridges or denture teeth.

The first step to replacing a full arch of teeth is to secure four or more implants to the jawbone. If there isn’t enough bone to properly secure the implants, the patient may need bone grafting or bone reconstruction.

It can take several months to a year for the implants to successfully heal and integrate with the patient’s jawline.

“We take a very patient-centered focus on our full arch cases,” Dr. Apekian said. “This is why we typically only see about a patient a month to do this kind of service. We devote a lot of time and attend to each patient as we know this is a significant investment in their future.”

What Makes Up Dental Implants?

Dental implants consist of three parts:

  • The implant – titanium posts – are surgically implanted into the jaw bone that works like the root of a tooth.
  • The abutment screws onto the implant but remains above the jawline to hold the prosthetic crown in place.
  • The crown resembles a natural tooth and is fastened to the abutment.

How Long Do Hybrid Implant Dentures Last?

The titanium implant that fuses with the jawbone is designed to be permanent, but the crown may need to be replaced due to normal wear and tear. Factors that impact a dental implant include:

  • Dental Hygiene
  • Diet
  • How you use your teeth

“The new year is a great time to consider new intentions and make your health a priority,” Dr. Apekian said. “A new smile cannot only help alleviate symptoms and make chewing more comfortable, but it can also bring back a confidence that affects every aspect of your life.”

With state-of-the-art equipment and industry-leading dentists, there’s no better place for fixed hybrid dentures than Midtown Dental.
