Dr. Apekian reviewing a full mouth reconstruction patient case

Bringing back your smile through full mouth reconstruction, also known as full mouth restoration, is a process of rebuilding, restoring, or replacing most or all of the teeth in your upper and lower jaw.

The journey from your first appointment with our friendly, expert staff at Midtown Dental to your final procedure can last months and, in some cases, up to a year.

How long a full mouth reconstruction takes is dependent on your treatment plan, but we’ve highlighted the average timeframe for mouth rehabilitation after the most common dental procedures.

Dental Implants, Crowns & Porcelain Veneers

Full mouth reconstruction treatment can include dental implants to replace missing teeth, root canal therapy followed by crowns, and veneers to ensure your remaining natural teeth match the appearance of other dental work.

Dental Implants

If our dentists have determined you have multiple missing teeth or need several extractions for your full mouth reconstruction, we’ll start the dental implant process. Dental implant surgery is typically a two-step process, depending on the number of implants.

After extraction, it will take your mouth’s soft tissue between 3-4 weeks to heal and an additional 3-4 months of recovery after the installation of the implants.

Dental Crowns

If we can salvage your natural teeth, you may need root canal therapy and a dental crown as part of your full mouth reconstruction. Modern root canals are similar to a routine filling and can be usually completed in one or two appointments, depending on your circumstances.

The procedure removes the soft center of the unhealthy tooth, known as the pulp, which is made up of nerves, connective tissue, and blood vessels that innervate the tooth. Crowns and dental bridges are recommended following a root canal to protect the remaining tooth or teeth.

The recovery period after the placement of a dental crown or dental bridge is typically a few days. Inflammation, sensitivity, and irritation after the procedure should subside within 1-2 weeks.

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain or resin composite pieces that permanently attach to your teeth. A veneer changes the color, shape, and size of your existing teeth. We may use veneers to match other dental work during your full mouth reconstruction.

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells designed to fit on your teeth and require less enamel removal than a cap or crown. Porcelain veneers are strong, durable, and stain-resistant while providing a natural look.

If we can enhance healthy teeth with veneers, it will take you about two weeks for your mouth to adjust.

Periodontal Disease Treatment

Another part of your full mouth reconstruction could be the treatment of gum disease. Periodontal disease is the advanced form of gingivitis caused by plaque buildup on teeth.

You may not realize you have gum disease. Your gums may swell, bleed, and recede, but besides some pink toothpaste spat into your sink basin when you brush your teeth, there may not be noticeable indicators, like jaw pain.

The dental specialists at Midtown Dental are experts at identifying infected gums in a patient’s mouth. Depending on how severe your periodontal disease is, the treatment timeframe will differ. If you need serious treatment, like gum grafting or gum surgery, it will take a few weeks to months for your grafts to heal.

Additional Restorative Dentistry

Your unique treatment process for your full mouth reconstruction may require more dental care, including:

  • Orthodontics
  • Gum tissue recontouring
  • Treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder
  • Corrective jaw surgery
  • Deep cleanings
  • Crown lengthening
  • Teeth whitening
