Warning Signs of Impacted Wisdom Teeth

August 14, 2015

Third molars, often referred to as "wisdom teeth" erupt between 17-21 years of age.  However, most of us have limited space for their eruption, which is why they are commonly impacted.  Impaction of wisdom teeth may cause the following symptoms:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Tender or bleeding gums
  • Jaw pain
  • Swelling around the jaw
  • Bad breath
  • An unpleasant taste in your mouth
  • Difficulty opening your mouth

At Midtown Dental in Sacramento, we take full panoramic x-rays at to evaluate wisdom teeth. Clues as to their position and evaluation of the developing jaw can help Dr. Jenny Apekian predict whether or not there may be room.

Removing the wisdom teeth before the roots are fully developed makes the surgery less invasive, thereby minimizing post-operative discomfort. Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth may need to be removed to prevent future pain or damage to adjacent teeth.  If the wisdom teeth do have room to erupt, it is essential to keep those areas clean with proper brushing and flossing. Oftentimes, these are areas that are more difficult to access, making hygiene less than ideal and causing you other problems.

If you are concerned about your wisdom teeth, schedule a consultation with Jenny Apekian DDS in Sacramento at (916) 441-5800.  The sooner you can address any potential wisdom tooth issues, the happier you will be.
